We are delighted to be an official partner of National Mentoring Day 2016 on 27th October.
The summit event will bring together over 200 of the most influential people in the mentoring world to help profile the amazing impact that mentoring has for education, enterprise, the economy and our society.
I am delighted to be on the panel again alongside Helen Walbey - FSB, Clive Rich - Lawbite, Jonathan Pfahl - Rockstar Group, Amrita Das - Careers & Enterprise Company, Jonathan Freeman, Varinder Dhaliwal - Mosaic Princes Trust and Ken Cowen - School of Hard Knocks.
This year Panel Topics will include 'The real value of mentoring and how we can further advance mentoring for the benefit of all involved.'
Last year we supported the first day of this event created by Chelsey Baker.
That first event was a great success and it was reported across all the national press as well as being on both Sky and the BBC. I enjoyed being on the panel of the National Mentoring Day discussing the benefits of mentoring along with Ruth Lowbridge MBE, Jonathan Pfahl and Kerrie Dorman. The questions from the floor really showed the interest and the appetite for everyone to understand and get involved more in mentoring.
This National Mentoring Day has been created to celebrate all types of mentoring with the intention of helping to raise awareness of the importance of mentoring and to get more people and more organisations involved. The mentoring showcased ranges from youth to enterprise mentoring. It includes all sectors and educational bodies including organisations such as the prison service.
I think this is a great chance for the UK to really show what it is special at by understanding the value mentoring brings to everyone involved – the mentor, the mentee and any organisation involved. Mentoring shows the true spirit of collaboration whether it be paid for or voluntary mentoring as it helps everyone to see different points of view and learn from each other.
As the ambassador for Mentorsme, the Govt recognised enterprise mentoring portal, I know first hand how many people are interested in mentoring and they simply don’t realise the level of support that is out there or how they can get involved. I hope the National Mentoring Day 2016 will help with this.
The organisations we work with that train their staff to mentor externally as well as internally, I feel, gain the most benefits as it leads to an upskilled and engaged team who also understand issues outside their own workplace. It also gives that organisation a flexible opportunity to make a difference and to engage with people important to them externally.
This year the summit event for National Mentoring Day is being kindly hosted by Lord Young at the House of Lords. It's great that we have the central event and the aim is to replicate that by encouraging and recognising all types of mentoring across all of the UK.
The National Mentoring Day Website has numerous resources to help individuals or mentoring programmes to celebrate in their area or within their organisation. The most popular ways to get involved that I have seen so far with our clients and partners are by using these resources:
Social media – Getting involved with the overall National Mentoring Day campaign to raise the awareness of mentoring. See Leapfrog Mountains Twitter Feed @Leapfrog_M or Mentoring Rocks @mentoringrocks. Use #nationalmentoringday for your tweets.
Events – Running your own event to celebrate mentoring and letting us know so that we can help profile the event
Thank you cards – Downloading the thank you cards to acknowledge the support a mentor has given you.
Case studies – Sharing great examples of how mentoring has worked for you in practice to inspire and encourage others to get involved.
Champion mentors – Training skilled experienced mentors to help less experienced mentors on their journey. We are currently working with Scottish Chambers of Commerce to create a new champion mentor team there that are fully qualified.
We would love you to get involved too in any way that helps you so that we can all really celebrate National Mentoring Day 2016 and raise the awareness of mentoring everywhere!
Thanks,
Jackie
